Fallen CHP officer's family releases statement on his organ donation

Shortly after CHP Officer Kenyon Youngstrom was taken off life support Wednesday, his organs and tissue were donated. His Cordelia family released a statement on his final public act through the donor network nonprofit. Here is the news release:

The tragic death of California Highway Patrol Officer Kenyon Youngstrom in the line of duty leaves all of us with a profound sense of grief, California Transplant Donor Network CEO Cynthia Siljestrom said Thursday. It was Kenyon's wish and that of his family that he continue to save lives as an organ and tissue donor. We are honored to be a part of carrying out that wish. About that gift of life, his family has issued the following statement:
"Kenyon was always giving to others and serving others as a CHP officer and in his life with us. Our grief is overwhelming. But in his special way, Kenyon carries on in helping others.

Those who knew him would not be surprised to learn that Kenyon chose to register as an organ and tissue donor.

When Kenyon graduated from the police academy he was told his job was to save a life; he does so now through his decision.

Through this gift, he will save the lives of those who need transplants as well as potentially improve the lives of many. This was our Kenyon, he's our hero and, in the midst of our grief, we are comforted to know he continues to help others."

Six Years Running: Marathon Team Races To Raise Organ Donation Awareness

The members of Spare Parts 6, a relay team in this year's Vermont City Marathon, are running to raise awareness about organ donation. The team is part of the Transplant Donor Network, and it's the sixth year the network has had a team run the marathon They range in age from their mid-twenties to their mid-sixties. Their ranks include teachers, physicians, administrators and a former state commissioner.  Together, they make up the team Spare Parts 6 in this year’s Vermont City Marathon, and they are running for a cause: to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation throughout the state. The five relay members — Dr. Harry Chen, Dawn Bissonnette, Shaina Kaye, Dr. Bridgett Marroquin and Jean DeMaroney — are part of the Transplant Donor Network (TDN), which is affiliated with the University of Vermont Medical Center. News 7 Melbourne | Karen O'Sullivan FIRST ON 7: Surgeons who pioneered liver transplants 25 years ago are now setting their sights on performing Australia's first stomach transplant. Professor Bob Jones, who has performed hundreds of operations, says he still believes they are a miracle. Renee Cowton was a scared ten-year-old when she became the first child liver transplant recipient in Australia. "I knew it was huge and I knew that death could happen if it didn't work," she said.
