Greenville SC - An Upstate woman is thankful to be alive after having a triple transplant. Stephanie Lindstrom has been in the hospital nearly four months and the medical bills are piling up.
Joel Lindstrom said his wife of 14 years was born with a heart defect. She has had five open heart surgeries, most recently in 2010. Last year, she went on the transplant list hoping and praying she would get a new heart before it was too late.
"May 19, she passed out and fell upstairs in our bathroom," Joel Lindstrom said. "She hit her head and broke her nose."
Joel said she was then rushed to the hospital and has been at Emory ever since. They told her she not only needed a heart, but that her liver and kidney were failing her too. This summer, they thought those organs would never arrive in time.
"We found out on the Fourth of July they told us that she was probably not going to make it," Joel Lindstrom said. "We were preparing for the worst."
