As the demand for kidney transplants increases, health correspondent Rachel Allen finds out how Cambridge surgeons and scientists are leading the way in finding innovative solutions to the shortage in suitable organ donations.
LIVES are saved every day thanks to the âmiracleâ that is organ transplantation â" however as a nation we are struggling to meet the growing need â" especially for kidneys.
Prof Andrew Bradley, clinical director of transplant surgery at the Cambridge Transplant Unit at Addenbrookeâs, and his team are leading the world in a new kind of kidney transplantation that had previously been discounted.
Prof Bradley said: âThere is an increasing discrepancy between the huge number of patients waiting for a kidney transplant and the number of available organs.
âWaiting lists are going up but the number of organs is static.â
The need was so great within the Addenbrookeâs remit that the unit decided to address the problem, and test another avenue of donors.
