Latinos Make Up Half of Organ Transplant Wait List

In greater Los Angeles, nearly half the 7,800 people registered with the United Network for Organ Sharing network and waiting for organs to become available were of Hispanic or Latino descent.

Nearly half of the people awaiting organ transplants in the greater Los Angeles area are Hispanic, according to the nonprofit OneLegacy, an organ and tissue recovery group serving a population of about 19 million.

The number of Hispanic families who agreed to donate organs at the death of a relative at a hospital was a record last year -- about 75 percent, up sharply from 40-60 percent a decade ago, according to OneLegacy. In greater Los Angeles, nearly half the 7,800 people registered with the United Network for Organ Sharing network and waiting for organs to become available were of Hispanic or Latino descent, according to OneLegacy, which works with more than 200 hospitals and transplant centers.

According to OneLegacy, many Roman Catholics inaccurately believe the church does not support organ donation, but popes have described it as an act of love. Another perceptual barrier to organ donation, according to the group, is the false belief that organ donation prevents the family from having an open- casket funeral.
