Hospital challenging local organizations to encourage employees to become organ and tissue donors
(PETERBOROUGH) The local hospital is hoping to inspire Peterborough residents to become organ and tissue donors.
In one week, from Sept. 10 to 14, the hospital had hoped to see 150 new registrations for organ donations, through the Trillium Gift of Life Network.
Within the first day of the campaign, residents surpassed the goal, says Dr. Peter McLaughlin, chief of staff at the hospital, although he isn't sure exactly how many have signed on since Sept. 10.
Now, the hospital is aiming to have 10 per cent of its approximate 200 staff members register.
"It's also a challenge we're putting out to other organizations in our community," says Dr. McLaughlin. "To jump on with their employees to become donors."
Dr. McLaughlin says signing on takes approximately one minute, and can make a world of difference to a recipient.
"Imagine if you're blind and haven't been able to see for years because of a corneal disease," he says. "Then to get a new cornea, what that would mean to a person's life."
Currently 23,492 residents of the City of Peterborough, approximately 31 per cent of the population, have signed on to become donors if they pass away, ranking the City 51st out of 179 communities in the province for organ and tissue donor registration.
