Wisconsin Mother to Honor the Life of Her Daughter at Rose Bowl Parade

MIDDLETON, WIS. â€" A Wisconsin mother will honor the life of her daughter and thousands of others who gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation as one of 32 people riding a special float in the 2013 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Sue Pasewald, mother of tissue donor Christina, will ride the Donate Life float in recognition of the thousands of individuals who donate tissue including bone, skin, heart valves, connective tissue, veins and pericardium each year. Sue’s trip to Pasadena is sponsored by RTI Donor Services, a founding sponsor of the float and one of more than 120 associations across the nation â€" including organ and tissue recovery organizations, industry partners, transplant centers and transplant recipient groups â€" supporting the float project. This is RTI’s tenth consecutive year supporting the program.

Sue and her husband Dave were blessed with five children â€" Ron, Julie, Amy, Christina and David. Their daughter Christina was born on March 25, 1984. According to Sue, Christina achieved so much in her short life, and she had a way about her that caused everyone who came into contact with her to love her. On July 2, 2007, Christina was tragically taken from Sue and Dave.

Six Years Running: Marathon Team Races To Raise Organ Donation Awareness

The members of Spare Parts 6, a relay team in this year's Vermont City Marathon, are running to raise awareness about organ donation. The team is part of the Transplant Donor Network, and it's the sixth year the network has had a team run the marathon They range in age from their mid-twenties to their mid-sixties. Their ranks include teachers, physicians, administrators and a former state commissioner.  Together, they make up the team Spare Parts 6 in this year’s Vermont City Marathon, and they are running for a cause: to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation throughout the state. The five relay members — Dr. Harry Chen, Dawn Bissonnette, Shaina Kaye, Dr. Bridgett Marroquin and Jean DeMaroney — are part of the Transplant Donor Network (TDN), which is affiliated with the University of Vermont Medical Center. Professor Bob Jones, who has performed hundreds of operations, says he still believes they are a miracle. Renee Cowton was a scared ten-year-old when she became the first child liver transplant recipient in Australia. "I knew it was huge and I knew that death could happen if it didn't work," she said. Surgeon, Professor Jones from the Austin Hospital admits 25 years ago the risks were high. "We sought of thought we knew what we were doing, and we were very lucky we got away with it," Jones said.
