Rose Parade Float To Honor Sandy Hook 26

Floragraphs on the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade Donate Life float, “One More Day,” honor the memory of organ donors, transplant candidates and recipients, and living donors, as does the Dedication Garden that decorates each year’s Donate Life float. This year, the 2013 “Journey of the Heart” Donate Life Dedication Garden will include 26 roses in vials carrying the names of each of those who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School. â€"photo courtesy of Tournament of Rose.

Among the 41 floats that will drift past paradegoers at the 124th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, January 1, 2013, in Pasadena, Calif., one will carry a remembrance of the 20 schoolchildren and six staff members who perished December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. That is the Donate Life float.

Inspired by the "26 Acts of Kindness" call that originated with a tweet by NBC newswoman Ann Curry (originally 20 acts), said Donate Life float committee volunteer Rivian Bell, Thursday, December 20, in a conversation with The Bee, float volunteers have decided to place 26 roses in vials in the Dedication Garden that makes up a portion of the 2013 float.

Each of those 26 vials will contain a name of one of those whose life tragically ended December 14.

"We feel so much compassion. We deal with [people grieving] constantly," Ms Bell said. "We hope that it gives a little solace," she said, and hopes that the parents and families of those at Sandy Hook School will be comforted if they see the float in the parade, and know that their loss has been honored.

Donate Life is a nonprofit alliance of national organizations and state teams across the United States committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation. According to its website, donatelifefloat.org, "The Donate Life float honors millions of people touched by organ, eye and tissue donation, including living donors, donor families, transplant recipients and transplant candidates."

This is done, said Ms Bell, through portraits of donors, known as "floragraphs," decorated by donors' families and volunteers and placed on the float. This year, there will be 72 floragraphs on the "Journey of the Heart" Donate Life float, lining a heart-shaped path. Additionally, the Dedication Garden aboard the float provides a further opportunity to honor the memories of donors.

Each of the thousands of dedication roses in the garden is placed in a vial that carries a personal message of remembrance.

"This float has given us the chance to bring so many stories to life," said Ms Bell, "and the committee behind the float, One Legacy, wanted to honor the 26 in Connecticut. Sometimes, the little things make people feel better. That's what we believe this is."
