Donate Life California & California Highway Patrol Launch Special License Plate

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

With shared missions to save lives, Donate Life California and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced today a special license plate to spread the life-saving message that organ and tissue donation saves lives. The license plate features the Pink “DONOR” Dot, which also appears on driver licenses and ID cards across the state, along with the message “Save Lives! Be an Organ & Tissue Donor.”

Reservations are officially open for the new Pink Dot Plate. All Californians are encouraged to consider reserving one today to show support for this life-saving endeavor. As soon as 7,500 paid reservations have been obtained, production of the colorful special license plates can begin. Proceeds from the license plates will save lives by supporting Donate Life California’s statewide outreach and education programs on organ and tissue donation.

“My husband, Kenyon, was a registered organ and tissue donor. He believed in helping people which is why he was a CHP officer. When he died and became a donor, I knew that’s what he wanted. He saved lives even at the end of his,” said Karen Youngstrom. “I will think of Kenyon every time I see a Pink Dot Plate driving down the highway. I hope it will serve as a reminder how precious life is.”

Six Years Running: Marathon Team Races To Raise Organ Donation Awareness

The members of Spare Parts 6, a relay team in this year's Vermont City Marathon, are running to raise awareness about organ donation. The team is part of the Transplant Donor Network, and it's the sixth year the network has had a team run the marathon They range in age from their mid-twenties to their mid-sixties. Their ranks include teachers, physicians, administrators and a former state commissioner.  Together, they make up the team Spare Parts 6 in this year’s Vermont City Marathon, and they are running for a cause: to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation throughout the state. The five relay members — Dr. Harry Chen, Dawn Bissonnette, Shaina Kaye, Dr. Bridgett Marroquin and Jean DeMaroney — are part of the Transplant Donor Network (TDN), which is affiliated with the University of Vermont Medical Center. Professor Bob Jones, who has performed hundreds of operations, says he still believes they are a miracle. Renee Cowton was a scared ten-year-old when she became the first child liver transplant recipient in Australia. "I knew it was huge and I knew that death could happen if it didn't work," she said.
