Donor's joy at letter of thanks from family of teenager

FIONA PRETTY donated her kidney and was thrilled to find out it saved the life of a 17-year-old boy.

AN Edinburgh woman has spoken of her joy after discovering her donated kidney saved the life of a teenage boy.

Big-hearted Fiona Pretty, 49, underwent months of tests before she was given the go ahead to become a live donor.

After surgery she left a card with her kidney at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary’s transplant unit, bearing the message: “I hope my gift to you allows you to do the things you’ve always dreamed of.”

As an altruistic donor â€" someone who gives an organ to help a stranger â€" Fiona thought she’d never find out who had received her organ.

But just one week after her operation, the mum-of-two received an anonymous thank you letter in the post from a woman and her 17-year-old son.

Fiona said: “Receiving that letter was one of the most emotional moments of my life. The boy’s mum outlined her son’s story from start to finish.
