AMANDA McCOY/SUN HERALD Jennifer Cartwright and her family are honoring the memory of her four-year-old son, Pierce, by holding a blood drive and health fair at Gautier Middle School on Saturday. Pierce died in a drowning accident in May.

Pierce Cartwright was an outgoing, happy-go-lucky 4-year-old who loved helping people, and when he tragically died just days after his birthday in May, his family took his helping attitude and put it to practice by donating his heart.

On Saturday, his parents will once again honor their son by helping others at a health fair and memorial blood drive at Gautier Middle School.

"That was just Pierce's personality," his mother, Jennifer Cartwright of St. Martin, said with a smile. "He wanted to help, whether or not you wanted him to, he always wanted to help."

On May 25, the day of his fourth birthday party, Pierce drowned in a swimming pool at his family's home while they were preparing for his party. He was rushed to Ocean Springs Hospital, where his parents were given the terrible news -- their son had died.

"Someone called me as we were leaving the hospital to ask if we'd be interested in donating his heart," Jennifer Cartwright said. "I just cried and said 'yes, yes, absolutely, yes.' "
