Families connect in ways others can't fathom

Four local families face a common threat and a shared hope for new life.

Linked together by Oconomowoc High School, they can be excused if purple and gold are not their first choice in colors this month.

Instead, color them orange. Just like the orange dot organ donors sport on driver's licenses.

Donate Life Wisconsin (DLW) has re-named October Orangetober in an effort to increase the number of people registered online to become organ and tissue donors.

The organization reports it has reached the two million member mark and is working to double the number of new members added to the registry in October from 50,000 to 100,000. Its goal is to have at least 50 percent of residents from every county in Wisconsin registered as donors.

"While the statewide response to the new registry has been inspiring, we are determined to reach the three million mark even quicker so that fewer people die or needlessly suffer while waiting for a second chance at life," said Joanne MacInnes Grunau, president of DLW.

You don't have to look far find people who know all too well about that need, first-hand.
