The Affordable Care Act Marketplace is Open for Business

National Kidney Foundation

Open enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplaces begins tomorrow October 1 and will run through March 31, 2014 with coverage beginning January 1, 2014. As a result of the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), it is expected that tens of thousands of the uninsured will now have access to health insurance and for many people this coverage will be subsidized making it more affordable.

The National Kidney Foundation encourages those who do not have Medicare, Medicaid or other health insurance to explore their new options beginning tomorrow. Getting health insurance is an important step to gaining access to health care providers, medications, and treatments that can help those at risk of kidney disease and those with kidney disease better manage their health and help avoid kidney failure.

You can locate your local health insurance marketplace by visiting www.healthcare.gov or calling 1-800-318-2596. While you can compare health plans, apply for financial assistance and enroll online, in-person assistance will also be available in many communities to help you compare plans, determine your eligibility for financial assistance, and help you enroll. Given that this is a new program, some states may not have all of the information about financial assistance ready on October 1, but you can still explore the marketplace and learn more about your health insurance options.
