CAMBRIDGE MAN HAS BEEN POSITIVELY AFFECTED BY ORGAN TRANSPLANT

Image
The Daily Jeffersonian BARNESVILLE -- Last year approximately 28,000 Americans received a life-saving organ transplant and more than one million Americans received a life-changing tissue transplant. When just one individual makes the decision to donate, they can change the lives of more than 50 others. For those who have been blessed with good health, the thought of needing a life-saving organ transplant to survive has probably never crossed their mind. However, for the more than 115,000 Americans awaiting a life-saving transplant, this is everyday life. Tim Jones of Cambridge is one of those who has been positively affected by organ transplant. Tim, a heart transplant recipient learned of his heart condition at the age of 14, when his doctor realized his aortic valve was leaking. Despite several surgeries over the course of his life, Tim received the devastating news that he would need a heart transplant in the future to survive. Fortunately, Tim was one of the lucky ones; he received...

Bear, with me: Bowie boys basketball coach gives dad a second chance with kidney transplant

Image
El Paso Times | Felix Chavez Luis Celaya points to the signature on a special pillow of the doctor who performed his kidney transplant while sitting in the family living room with his son, Bowie High School boys basketball coach Daniel Celaya, who donated his kidney to his father. (Vanessa Monsisvais / El Paso Times) The decision was never in doubt for Daniel Celaya. His father, Luis Celaya, was in need of a kidney transplant. Daniel Celaya was a match. Luis Celaya is a loving, kind and supportive father who would do anything for his children. It seems his children have learned those values. Daniel says he was just doing something his father would have done. "I knew if I could donate my kidney and everything was set physically, there would be no hesitation on my part," said Daniel Celaya, the boys basketball coach at Bowie High School. "It took some time for all of this to happen. I had to lose weight and there were some hiccups along the way. Everything had to be just p...

He was about to sacrifice a healthy kidney to a total stranger. The gift was not an impulsive act of charity. Fazioli, 41, a Montreal television journalist, would gladly have given a kidney to his elderly father, Cos...

Many of the 650 participants in the Brain Aneurysm Race for Awareness, held in honor of Tim Susco, a 1999 South Lakes graduate who died suddenly in 2007 at the age of 25 from a brain aneurysm, participated in the event in memory of someone who had passed away following a brain aneurysm. Members of Team Barb were there in honor of Barbara Chirles, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 35. Barbara’s husband, Brian Chirles of Reston, said that shortly after Barbara’s death, he was looking for a way to remember his wife and perhaps do a bit of good, when he came across the Susco 8K. He and Barbara’s mother, Debby James of Lorton, along with a group of friends and family have participated in the Susco 8K every year. “This is a way to help ...

Organ Donation Becomes Part of California’s Curriculum

Image
CBS San Francisco | Melissa Curloss SACRAMENTO (KCBS) â€" Students in the state’s public schools are about to get a lesson or two in organ and tissue donation. Gov. Jerry Brown this week signed legislation requiring the inclusion of such  education  in California’s overall health and science curriculum. AB 1967 was authored by Assemblyman John A. Perez (D-Los Angeles). “This bill,” according to  California Legislative Information , “would require the (Instructional Quality Commission) and the (State Board of Education) to ensure that the health and science curriculum frameworks adopted in the course of the next submission cycle, as specified, include the subject of organ procurement and tissue donation, as appropriate.” KCBS’ Melissa Culross Reports: Organ Donation Becomes Part of California's Curriculum Advocates are applauding the move, which they believe will ultimately help whittle down the number of patients waiting for an organ. Nationwide, more than 1...

Harrell still waiting for a heart – Transplant Awareness Day event Sunday

Image
The Herald Sun | Dawn Baumgartner Vaughn DURHAM â€" Ivan K. Harrell is still waiting for a heart transplant, but he’s not waiting to get back into the game. A tennis phenom in his youth and then a local tennis coach, Harrell’s health sidelined his tennis game. Harrell has congestive heart failure, ventricular tachycardia, cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation among other health problems that began in 1993 at age 29. In 2010, he had surgery to implant a Left Ventricular Assist Device, or LVAD. The over-the-shoulder straps look like he’s wearing a backpack. The LVAD surgery and recovery was much harder than what he’ll go through for a heart transplant at UNC, Harrell said. He still has a bag packed and shaves body hair like his arms to be ready for an IV when the time comes. He’ll arrive with hospital socks on already, he said. In the meantime, Harrell is getting back into tennis. When he was feeling low, going to watch a tennis tournament and meeting players made a big d...

Craigslist kidney donation sparks unique friendship in Palm Beach County

Image
WPTV News Channel 5 | Dan Corcoran Photo: Selina HodgePhotographer: Dan Corcoran/WPTV PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - A Palm Beach County woman's online plea lead to a life-saving kidney transplant. Now, ten months after surgery, the organ donor and organ recipient have built an unbreakable bond. It was on Craigslist that c posted her plea. The headline on her listing read 'Young Female Needs Kidney'. She received that kidney - and a whole lot more - after another young woman answered Selina's call for help. You could call it a 'side effect' of a life-changing medical procedure. Under the knife together for an organ transplant was recipient Selina Hodge and donor Stephanie Grant. They were strangers who suddenly became connected.  "It's very important that we keep our friendship no matter what," said Selina.  That friendship began with Selina's unlikely posting on Craigslist. She was dealing with kidney failure, and in turn, years of dialysis. She ne...

CALIFORNIA TO INCLUDE IMPORTANT ORGAN & TISSUE DONATION EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

Donate Life California GOVERNOR BROWN SIGNS AB 1967 SACRAMENTO, CA, September 26, 2012 â€" Governor Jerry Brown on Sept. 26 signed Assembly Bill 1967, a bill introduced by the Speaker of the State Assembly John Pérez (D-Los Angeles), that will ensure information on organ and tissue donation is taught in health and science classes statewide. “I am very pleased the Governor has signed my legislation which will encourage young people to choose to become organ donors by ensuring they have access to the information to help them make an informed decision,” said Pérez. “More than 20,000 Californians are currently awaiting an organ to become available through donation, and by ensuring students have information on how to sign up, we can help ensure that these Californians can have a new lease on life that comes with an organ transplant.” As with drivers in other states, California teenagers obtaining their first driver licenses are presented with the question, “Do you wish to ...

Livonia councilman awaits kidney for needed transplant

Image
Observer and Eccentric Newspapers | Ken Abramczyk City Councilman Tom Robinson needs a kidney transplant soon. Robinson needs to find a donor quickly as he is suffering from kidney failure as the result of a slowly progressive kidney disease. Julie Robinson, Tom's wife, has set up a website ( www.kidneyfortomr.org ), asking for the public's help. Earlier this year Tom's sister offered a kidney and went through tests, but doctors did not want to use her as a donor. “We were told that in July, and it just devastated all of us,” Julie Robinson said. “It's pretty urgent. He needs a kidney.” Robinson, 46, suffers from IgA nephropathy or Berger's disease, a slowly progressive, chronic kidney disease. IgA is a protein and an antibody that helps the body fight infections. IgA nephropathy (Berger's disease) occurs when too much of this protein is deposited in the kidneys. IgA builds up inside the small blood vessels of the kidney. Structures in the kidney called ...

With one liver, surgeons at KU Hospital save two lives

Image
Kansas City.com | Mara Rose Williams Photo: KEITH MYERS | The Kansas City Star Pamela Lawson, one of the two recipients of a split liver, talked with doctors Timothy Schmitt (left) and Sean Kumer on Tuesday at the Univesity of Kansas Hospital. Pamela Lawson had been on the list for a liver transplant since July, waiting for doctors at the University of Kansas Hospital to call. At 1 a.m. Sept. 22, the phone rang. The hospital had a liver, but there was a catch: It was too large to fit into Lawson’s 5-feet 4-inch, 129-pound body. So her doctors had decided they would try an operation they said was a first for the Kansas City region. They would cut the liver in two, putting one lobe in Lawson and the other in another small woman needing a healthy liver. “It’s hard to turn down a perfect organ when you can modify it,” said Timothy Schmitt, one of the two doctors who performed the dual surgery. “Transplant surgery is sometimes like MacGyver surgery. You make it work.” At any giv...

Organ Donor Gives Unselfishly in Order for Others to Live

Image
Gwinnet, GA Patch | Ray Newman What does one do when a child dies before the parents? On a serious and sober note today, apart from what is happening in the world, I want to talk about something closer to home. There are people grieving the loss of a loved one. As a parent and grandparent, many people my age are somewhat accustomed to hearing about peers who have succumbed to sickness followed by death. For families who have loved ones serving in the military, there is always the fear of receiving that call telling them of their loved one dying in battle. As a minister for over 51 years, many times I have received the call about a person involved in an accident or news of a diagnosis of a terminal disease. In recent weeks, I have been involved in conducting funerals for people advanced in years. I will say no matter at what age a person departs this life, it is never easy for the family and friends who are left. There is a real time of grief and sorrow upon the death of a loved one. R...

Meikle, 56, has a transplanted heart from an Army Ranger who died after fighting to save his comrades in Afghanistan. "He saved people when he was wounded and saved even more people when he died; how many people can say that?" she said. September 18, 2012 | Michael Smart~Sun-Times Media Inside Judy Meikle’s chest beats the heart of Corporal Benjamin S. Kopp, a young U.S. Army Ranger who died from combat wounds suffered in Afghanistan. The Winnetka resident recipient spoke recently about her gratitude and the importance of organ donation at a meeting of the Dundee Township Rotary Club meeting at Emmett’s Ale House. “I’m the recipient of a miracle,” said Meikle. “Jill (Stephenson, Kopp’s mother) wakes up every day knowi...

Woman's liver donation saves the big sister she never had

Image
Quad Cities | Lindy Washburn Photo: McClatchy Newspapers Jennifer Carrino, left, and cousin Nina Walsh show off their surgery scars. Nina donated a portion of her liver to her older cousin, likely saving her life. Over the last year, Jennifer Carrino had come back from the brink of death, survived internal bleeding and spent weeks in intensive care. Then came the hard part: asking her cousin for a part of her liver. In April, doctors told Jennifer that without a transplant she probably had a year to live. Jennifer, 37, was already on transplant waiting lists in two states, but it was going to take too long, they said. She needed to think about a living donor. Jennifer turned to her younger cousin, Nina Walsh. She asked her to consider giving up part of her healthy liver. The procedure, pioneered 20 years ago, pushes the ethical boundaries of medicine because it goes against a basic tenet of medicine to "first do no harm." If she agreed, her cousin â€" a perfectly healthy...

Researchers refurbishing lungs once rejected for transplant

Image
WKTC | Monica Robins CLEVELAND -- Sal Pulito is one of four people in Ohio waiting for a heart/lung transplant. According to Lifebanc, there are 118 Ohioans waiting for lungs alone. "I don't know what it's like to breathe normally, but I'm looking forward to achieving my goals and living the life that I always wanted to live," Sal says. He was born with a heart defect called Pulmonary Atresia that limits blood and oxygen flow to his lungs. Even walking can be difficult. To learn more about Sal's battle, click HERE . Last month, Sal received the call he'd been waiting for. A donor had been found. Sal went to the Cleveland Clinic and prepped for surgery, but then his surgeon told him the organs weren't good enough to be transplanted. Read more

Rob and Karen Waddell chair annual Kidney Walk, sponsored by Brown-Forman

Image
Louisville | Jennifer Bowen The Brown-Forman Kidney Walk takes place at Waterfront Park this Saturday, September 30, but for Rob and Karen Waddell and their four kids, Saturday’s event means more than a walk in the park. At the age of 11, Rob Waddell and his siblings were tested for kidney disease due to their mother’s battle with the disease and the resulting renal dialysis and two kidney transplants. Rob’s test results were positive, but due to the slow progression of kidney disease he was granted a healthy youth. Rob remembers testing his blood pressure in a Biology class during college to learn that it was 165/100. Years later, in his mid-twenties, he attended a corporate health fair and once again tested positive for high blood pressure. Rob decided to retest for kidney disease, only to reaffirm the grim results. Over a decade later, Rob went into renal failure at the age of 38, while Karen was pregnant. Karen shared the news with their neighbor, Kim Hayden, who later shar...
