One year old undergoes double lung transplant

A first birthday is a milestone for most babies, but for Bella Luciana Tomlinson it was a miracle.

After spending almost a year in several hospitals and enduring numerous surgeries for a double lung transplant, Bella and her family celebrated her Aug. 26 birthday at their Jacksonville home.

“We weren’t supposed to be home until the 24th, but she was doing so good that they let us come home on the 16th,” her father Orville Tomlinson said.

Orville and his wife Maya said their faith was tested as their baby girl struggled with a rare disease that would require her to undergo a double lung transplant at just 10 months old. Although Bella couldn’t enjoy cake or ice cream on her birthday, her parents feel blessed just to see her smile and play with her big sister Essura.

“She is our miracle baby,” Orville said. “She’s been through so much this past year but we’re blessed to be finally home.”
