Families talk of the difficult but ultimately rewarding decision to donate their loved ones' organs. And patients describe what it's like waiting for a transplant, knowing that their time may run out.


Catriona Beer
The tragic death of Richard Beer, a 37-year-old computer programmer, gave someone he had never met the chance of a new life.

Richard Beer, a father of four from Henley, was on holiday in Perthshire with his wife Catriona and children when he was knocked off his bike and fatally injured.

Richard carried a donor card and Catriona had no hesitation in carrying out his wishes. One of his lungs was given to a man in Northern Ireland, who was severely disabled as a result of the lung disease fibrosing alveolitis.

Before the transplant 57-year-old Gerry McCormick needed oxygen 24 hours a day and was too breathless to bend down and tie his shoelaces.

In August 1999, on the first anniversary of receiving the lung, Gerry asked the transplant co-ordinators to pass on a letter to his donor's family expressing his profound thanks and describing how his life had changed following the transplant.
