New lungs and liver for Sault woman
Sault Star | Jeffrey Ougler

Nancy and Lou Salvalaggio are waiting in Toronto for Nancy to receive a double lung and liver transplant. The Torch of Life will be in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday in Nancy's honour.
Nancy Salvalaggio and her husband, Lou, had little to no sleep Sunday night after receiving the phone call that informed them Nancyâs lifeline might have been located: a new set of lungs and liver.
It turns out it had been.
The Sault Ste. Marie woman, 59, diagnosed with pulmonary fibroses more than a year ago, underwent a successful double lung and liver transplant Monday at Toronto General Hospital.
âIt was a very special night for us both because we were very much at peace because we had talked about the situation several times and how we were going to handle it,â Lou said Monday night from the hotel room at Residence Inn Toronto Downtown/Entertainment District where the couple has called home for nearly a year.
âWe were more than ready for this to happen. It was a very thought-provoking night for both of us. We've been here for 358 days and we have had a lot of time to discuss things and we've had conversations that I think a normal couple doesnât have time to do."
The couple received a call at 6:30 a.m. Monday confirming the organs were âclean,â free of disease, and Nancy was subsequently wheeled into the operating room at about 8 a.m. to undergo the life-altering procedure. By 1 p.m., she had new lungs and by 5:30 p.m., the liver transplant was compete. On Monday night, Nancy was unconscious and stable at Toronto Generalâs ICU, where she is expected to remain for two days.
