PLATTSBURGH â" Jonathan Waldron awakes every morning surrounded by machines, with a view of the nurseâs station across the hall.
In the Intensive Care Unit at Boston Childrenâs Hospital since May 30, he awaits news of a possible lung transplant.
âHeâs very close to the top of the list, and we have had offers that unfortunately havenât been good enough,â said Jonathanâs mother, Marlene Waldron.
Pediatric patients often canât accept adult organs, especially lungs, she said.
âItâs the hardest organ to transplant; itâs the only organ that interacts with the outside world,â she explained.
HELP BREATHING
Jonathan, 17, has cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening, chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
His body is rejecting the lungs from a 2008 transplant, which means he needs help breathing and ridding his body of carbon dioxide.
