Meet the kids who wouldn't be here if organ donors hadn't saved their parents

Daily Record UK | Emma Smith
ALL these kids were born after one of their grateful parents was given an organ - a gift that also meant life for these 21 youngsters.

Vicki Ferguson, 33
Mum to Oliver, three, and Harris, one, born after her liver transplant 15 years ago

Vicki, from Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire, had a successful transplant after suffering acute liver failure when she was 18.

Her condition was so severe that her own liver had to be removed prior to a suitable match being found for her.

Oliver and Harris, who was born on Mother’s Day last year, have been a huge blessing to Vicki and her husband Mac.

She said: “I am incredibly lucky to have been saved by organ donation and been able to go on to have my two wonderful boys.

“I have always been a maternal person so being a mum is a dream â€" I couldn’t ask for better.

“Having a transplant completely transformed my outlook on life and encouraged me to do things I’d never have thought of before, such as going to university.

“I have a lot to be thankful for and hope to set an example to my boys that they can achieve whatever they want to.”

Justin Notley, 42
Dad to Euan, 14, born 10 years after first transplant, and Alasdair, 11, and James, seven, born after second liver transplant

Justin, from Clarkston, Glasgow, developed liver failure when he was 19 and desperately needed a transplant to save his life in 1989.

Despite suffering a chronic rejection of the liver 11 years later, a second successful transplant in 2000 has given him a normal life.

Justin said: “Having a family with my wife Alison is something I always thought I would do. I know that this might not have happened without the gift of organ donation.

“Being well enough to enjoy my family is something I’m especially thankful for too. We are able to spend a lot of time together playing sports, which just wouldn’t have been feasible when I was ill.

“It really is impossible to measure how important the NHS Organ Donor Register is. It takes you back to normality, which is life-changing.”
