Donate Life South Carolina Hosts Organ, Eye, & Tissue Donor Awareness Event
WHAT: As a part of Donate Life Month, Donate Life South Carolina will hold a Donate LifeAwareness Day in the first floor lobby of the State House at 10:00 am, Thursday, April 4, 2013.Senator Katrina Shealy (Lexington County) introduced a resolution in the Senate designating this date as âOrgan Donor Registration Dayâ. The event will honor donor families and celebrate the gift of life through donation as well as offer the opportunity to learn more about life saving organ/ tissue donation. Individuals will also be given the opportunity to sign up as a donor on the South Carolina Donor Registry. Senator Shealy will speak along with Tracy Armstrong, the CEO ofDonate Life South Carolina (DLSC), Kevin A. Shwedo, the Executive Director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) and a representative from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Two transplant recipients and a living kidney donor will also take part in the brief program.
WHY: Every 10 minutes another person is added to the national transplant waiting list and approximately 1,000 people in South Carolina currently need an organ transplant. Many will die without more people becoming donors. Since South Carolinaâs Organ and Tissue Donor Registry launched on December 23, 2008 at the SCDMV more than 1.1 million people have signed up to become donors at either the SCDMV or online at www.DonateLifeSC.org. Over ninety eight percent of the people that are in the registry signed up at the SCDMV. Still, the number of people in need of transplants continues to rise. It is hoped that this resolution will help call attention the need for more organ, eye and tissue donors in South Carolina as well as inform the public about the South Carolina Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.
