Spread the word on organ donation
Niagara This Week
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the excellent coverage you have brought for organ and tissue donation awareness! Your help in spreading the word that this really works is vital to all the people still on the waiting list, some of whom wonât survive long enough to receive their life saving gift. Adam Kingz is just one of many (44 in the Hamilton area alone!!!) who can be saved by a hero. Please understand that we never wish for someone elseâs untimely death, just that they donât waste the chance to turn their personal tragedy into someone elseâs life saving miracle.
I have a daughter who received a life saving liver transplant, but I am also the sister to two donors, one living, one deceased. I can tell you that it brings great comfort to know that something good came from my brotherâs death. Since then I have been actively involved in raising awareness, including the highly successful âGo Green for Kayla Bakerâ campaign in Cambridge during April. Very few newspapers get all the information correct, like yours. I loved the headline of the opinion column by Katherine Grant which boldly declares to âregister your consentâ instead of the more common, and erroneous message to sign your donor card, which are now obsolete. It takes about two minutes to do it at www.beadonor.ca or any Service Ontario Centre.
Unfortunately, every three days, someone on the waiting list will die, for lack of a donor, and last year alone more than 300 lives could have been saved if the families had given their consent. We need people to talk about the issue now, so that in the event they are faced with making that decision, they can take comfort knowing that is what their love one would have wanted. Thank you for opening the dialogue.
More than 90 per cent of Canadian say that they support organ and tissue donation awareness, but less than 23 per cent have registered their consent. Statistically, you are more likely to need a donated organ than to donate one. If you would accept such a gift, shouldnât you also consent to giving one?
